Saint Michael’s Centre for Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Home Counselling Services.
Centrul de Zi pentru Copii cu Autism si Servicii de Consiliere la Domiciliu "Sfantul Mihail"

The Centre was founded through the aid of a pilot project suggestively entitled „They are our children too – a better life for autistic children” developed in 2002 with the help of the European Union and the National League of Associations for Persons with Mental Handicap and their Families from Romania.

The unwinding of the project offered undisputed chances of recovery for children and sustained the implementation of a new centre, which gradually became one of the most important ones in Romania regarding this field of activity.

From 2002 until 2006, the project was developed at the Foundation’s headquarters, and starting with 2006 a functioning partnership was established with the No.1 Special School for Deaf Children, where four working teams/groups designed for autistic children were assembled. Also, since 2006 the working conditions improved considerably, due to the fact that The Ministry of Education, Research and Youth (MECT) provided the much needed logistics (special areas in school, employees of MECT, etc.).
At the beginning, the Centre was meant for children with different ages but today, due to the increased therapeutic efficiency, the centre targets younger children, who can beneficiate from early interventions, also maintaining in school older children, in the same programme.

Within this Centre, educational and therapeutic services are offered for ASD children and the newest methods and techniques are applied in order to educate and recover children, like ABA, PECS, TEACCH. The pattern for behavioural analysis applied at UCLA – ABA implies intensive care and therapy for autistic children aged between 3 and 20 years. The specific therapy programme is comprised of forty hours of „one on one” intensive care activities (teacher and student), more exactly 6-8 hours per day, five days a week. The Centre’s activities take place within four specially equipped classrooms, a playground with sensory facilities for children and a gym hall. Also, the Foundation organized within the Centre various conferences, workshops and trainings to rise public’s awareness and change their attitude towards autistic spectrum disorders and the ones facing such challenges every day.

The team is comprised of social workers, kindergarten teachers (child care providers), specialised teachers and a project coordinator.

The Centre’s services comprise: day-care programme for children, evaluation programme and home coordination and counselling programme.
